After completion of the school education at St. Aloysius' college, Ratnapura, Sanjeewa Prasad Jayaweera entered the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the University of Peradeniya and obtained the B.V.Sc. degree with a Second class upper division honor. Immediately after graduation, he was recruited as a temporary assistant lecturer to the Department of Preclinical studies of the same faculty. In 2000, he joined the Department of Livestock Production of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka as a lecturer (probationary). Upon completion of the postgraduate requirement, he was promoted to the Senior lecturer (Grade 11) and at present working as a Senior Lecturer (Grade 1).

After the B.V.Sc. first degree, he has completed an M.Sc. degree in Food and Nutrition at the Gent University, Belgium. He has also obtained the M.Phil degree in Animal Science (specialized in Meat Science) from the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture of the University of Peradeniya. At present, he is reading for a P.hD at the PGIA under a collaborative research program between Sri Lanka and India.

Sanjeewa Prasad Jayaweera has contributed to the development of the Sabaragamuwa University in numerous ways. He has served as a student counselor, warden of the boy's hostels (2 years), Senior student counselor of the university (4 years), Director of the Career Guidance unit (2 years), and Director of Student welfare unit (2 years). He has also beared responsibilities as Acting Head of the Department of Livestock Production (3 years) and the Head of the Department (3 years). He is working as the Head of the Department of Livestock Production at present too. He was the coordinator of the world bank funded IRQUE project in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences for 2 years and also the founder coordinator of the Livestock Extension and Research Centre (LERC), under which a large number of educational and extension programs are conducted in many areas of the country. He has initiated and coordinated the Cattle breeding center activities and contributed to national development. 

 He is involved in teaching Meat Science and Technology, Swine Production, Animal Health and Hygiene, Anatomy and Physiology of Farm Animals, Management of Non-Ruminant and Management of Ruminant subjects for Agricultural Sciences undergraduates of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. At the same time, he is working as a visiting lecturer at the AQUINAS Higher Education Institute to conduct lectures and practicals for undergraduates of the B.Sc. Agro-Industry Management course.
